Tool Cabinet Drawers

The drawers are constructed after the main box is made and the doors are cut from the box. Before cutting the dado in the sides, they recommend making the gallery and drawers first. Then the drawers can be used to determine the location of the dado cuts.

All the drawers are made from 1/2" plywood with the bottoms of the drawers being 1/4" plywood. If you purchased the plans from Fine Woodworking you will notice they recommend the following size and quantities for the drawers:

Sides (12 QTY)= 2 19/32 wide by 10 1/4" long
Front & Back (12 QTY)= 2 19/32 wide by 14 15/16" long
Bottom (6 QTY)= 1/4" X 9 3/4" X 14 7/16"
Drawer divider(1 QTY)= 1/2" X 8 3/8" X 9 1/2" (there are three drawers on each side with this piece being used as the divider)

The drawer guides (12 QTY) are created from  1/4 hard maple. Their size = 1/2" X 9 1/2"

Since I didn't make the drawers I won't go into detail about their construction. The six drawers are made using 1/4" finger joint that are 1/2" deep. The bottom of the drawers are rabbet cut 1/4" X 1/4" to accept the 1/4" plywood bottom.

The article in Fine Woodworking goes into detail about a method of hanging the drawers so they fit perfectly. I actually wish I understood his explanation, but since I didn't made the drawers I didn't study take the time to understand his explanation.
